More than 15,000 claims against Janssen Pharmaceuticals have been filed by people who have had severe bleeding incidents after taking Xarelto, a popular blood-thinning drug.
Risk of bleeding is the most serious side effect of all blood-thinning medication. Thousands of lawsuits accuse Bayer Healthcare and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Xarelto, of not providing adequate warnings about the risk of uncontrollable bleeding. The problem with Xarelto is that there isn't an antidote to stop the bleeding, unlike other blood thinners, Coumadin (Warfarin), which has been on the market since the 1950's and can be reversed with a dose of Vitamin K.
In the state of Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, there are now more than 1,000 lawsuits pending in a mass-tort. And, as of December 15, almost 15,000 additional Xarelto lawsuits were pending in a federal Multi-District Litigation (MDL No. 2592) in Louisiana.
Federal trials will begin in March of 2017. The first state-court cases will go to trial in late 2017, unless a settlement is reached before then.
In 2011, Showard Law Firm was involved in a settlement against the makers of Pradaxa, another blood-thinner, for $650 million.
