Water-inflating toys recalled for choking hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Health Canada and Ohio-based Dunecraft Inc. have announced the recall of four inflatable toys because they could choke children who swallow them. The recall comes after an 8-month old Texas girl swallowed one of Dunecraft's Water Balz, which expanded in her body, blocked her intestine and had to be surgically removed.

The recall affects Water Balz, Growing Skulls, H2O Orbs “Despicable Me” and Fabulous Flowers toys. About 95,000 such toys were sold in the United States for about $3 each at various retailers and online. The marble-sized toys are meant to absorb water and grow up to 400 times their original size.

If swallowed, the toys expand inside the body and cause a blockage in the small intestine, resulting in severe discomfort, vomiting and dehydration; injuries could be life threatening. The toys do not show up on an X-ray and require surgery to be removed.

Consumers should immediately take this recalled toy away from children and call Dunecraft for a free replacement toy at (800) 306-4168, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit and click on the recall tab for more information.
