Motorcyclists have the odds against them every time they ride.

Over the last several years, an increase in a popularity of motorcycles has led to an increase in the fatal motorcycle accidents. Between 1997 and 2006, there was a 127 percent increase in the number of motorcycle related fatalities as the popularity of motorcycles exploded.

With less metal surrounding the rider, it is clear why motorcyclists are in a vulnerable position. Statistically, the motorcycle is the most dangerous vehicle on the road. The fatality rate on motorcycles is 42 fatalities per 100 million miles traveled. It sounds like good odds, but the 100 million miles is for all bikes on the road.

In contrast, for automobile occupants the rate is 1.2 times per 100 million miles traveled.

Statistics show that 80 percent of all motorcycle accidents result in injury or death to the rider, and while accidents may have many causes, some of them are not the fault of the motorcyclist. In more than half of all motorcycle fatalities, the rider collides with another moving vehicle— often an automobile.

In those cases, Tucson motorcycle accident lawyers know it is possible that the other motorist did something to cause the accident. Often drivers do not see motorcycles in their mirrors, or they fail to see them before making a left hand turn, or the driver fails to properly estimate the maneuverability of the bike.

While other factors can play a role like hazardous road conditions and even defects to the bike itself, anytime a rider crashes it is important to get to the cause. If the rider was not at fault, he or she may have a personal injury case.
