Have you suffered an infection after knee or hip surgery?
Forced air warming blankets are devices used during surgery to keep the patient's body warm by blowing hot air onto the skin during surgery. Use of the forced air warming blanket during orthopedic surgery, or surgeries involving implants, may carry a higher risk for contaminating surgical site which can result in serious infections. Such infections often lead additional surgery to treat the infection and/or replace the original implant.
Forced air warming blankets are currently used in more than 80% of all hip and knee replacement surgeries. Some of the hot air may escape below the surgical table which can push "dirty air" off the operating room floor and into the surgical field resulting in an increased risk of infection.
