Plaintiffs Requesting Consolidation of All Similar Viagra Cases Linked to Melanoma

Posted by Sarah Showard | Jan 25, 2016 | 0 Comments

Plaintiffs alleging a link between Viagra and melanoma have recently filed a request with the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) seeking consolidation of all similar cases pending in federal court.  A minimum of 24 complaints are pending in U.S. district court against Pfizer, the manufacturer of Viagra—a commonly prescribed medication for erectile dysfunction. The plaintiffs allege that one of Viagra's side effects is an increased risk of melanoma, and that Pfizer failed to provide an adequate warning. First approved by the FDA in 1998, Viagra has been prescribed to millions of men. However, medical studies completed in the past several years show a link between PDE5 inhibitors, a class of drugs that includes Viagra, and melanoma—suggesting that such drugs may affect the body's resistance to the cancer's spread. A 2014 study also found that men who took Viagra were twice as likely to be diagnosed with melanoma as  men who did not take the drug.
