Melanoma risks double for young indoor tanners, researchers say

You might think that it's safer to use a tanning bed than bake yourself out in the sun. In some respects, it is … but indoor tanning isn't entirely without its own risks. Experts say melanoma is on the rise, particularly for those under 35 who do their tanning indoors. There's a 20 percent increased risk for melanoma for indoor tanners, but that doubles for those who use tanning beds before age 35, experts say.

“Powerful ultraviolet tanning units may be 10 to 15 times stronger than the midday sunlight on the Mediterranean Sea, and repeated exposure to large amounts of ultraviolet A delivered to the skin in relatively short periods (typically 10 to 20 minutes) constitutes a new experience for humans,” according to new research.

Researchers urge stricter regulation of tanning facilities, especially for younger users. In the United States, only California bans adolescents from tanning salons, they noted.
