Medication Errors Often Overlooked In Hospitals

Medical malpractice in children from medication errors

Keeping children safe from medication errors requires awareness.

At the Showard Law Firm, we help patients who have been the victims of medications that have not performed as they were intended. A variety of medications for several different illnesses and conditions have caused serious side effects for patients, and personal injury attorneys in Tucson make it our mission to help those who have been injured.

However, medications can also cause serious problems in children not because of the medication itself but because of the dosage. Doctors say there are several unique challenges to treating children that make prescriptions especially dangerous. Their smaller organs don't deal with medication as readily, leading to a dangerous possibility of having toxic levels of medication in the blood.

Many medications are actually designed for adults, and the dosages are simply reduced using math to account for the child's smaller size. A misplaced decimal point can have disastrous results.

There are other ways children can be victims of medication. Misdiagnosis leading to the wrong medication, equipment failures in medication delivery, mistyping of blood, and mistakes in dietary orders can all contribute to injury in children.

If your child is under a medical professional's care in Arizona, ask questions about everything. Make sure you know what the medications are and what they are supposed to do. Also, watch your child for warning signs that something is wrong. Children often are not very good at conveying how they feel, so parents need to be aware of something does not seem right.

Staying aware of every aspect of your child's care can reduce the possibility of medication errors that can cause serious illness.
