The new labels will have more information about acute kidney injuries and recommendations about how to minimize risk.
The FDA says that they have received 101 reports of acute kidney injury form March 2013 through October 2015. This number only includes reports submitted to the FDA so there are likely many more cases. One fifth of those cases required hospitalization in intensive care and four involved death. For more than half of the cases, the problem occurred within a month of the patient beginning the medication.
The FDA recommends that prior to beginning these medications, kidney function be assessed and monitored periodically thereafter. If acute kidney injury occurs the drug should be discontinued promptly.
