FDA ISSUES WARNING ABOUT SERIOUS SIDE-EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH FLUROQUINOLONES OUTWEIGHING THE BENEFITS

Fluroquinolones are the most popular drugs to treat mild bacterial infections, but it was not until recently that their deadly side-effects were exposed. Over 33 million Americans have taken these antibiotics annually, and of these, the most popular is Levaquin, made by the company Johnson & Johnson. Many physicians were unaware of the side-effects of taking these drugs are prescribing fluroquinolones for conditions such as earaches, bronchitis, and sinusitis. The frequency at which these drugs are used has resulted in both bacterial resistance and life-threatening side-effects. Some of these side-effects are paralysis, excruciating joint pain, tendon ruptures, breathing difficulties, exhaustion, neurological damage, dizziness, depression, and anxiety. The Journal of the American Medical Association issued a report in 2015 which showed a two-fold increase in risk of dissection and aneurysm within just sixty days of using fluroquinolones. The British Medical Journal published a study which showed a three-fold increase in aortic aneurysms. Charges have been against former FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg for approving the drug when she was aware of the side-effects because it would benefit her husband's hedge fund which had large stakes in Johnson & Johnson. The FDA has now issued a warning which states that the serious side-effects associated with fluroquinolones outweigh the benefits, and they should be reserved for people who do not have alternative options.
