Propoxyphene is an opioid medication used to relieve mild to moderate pain manufactured by Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals.

The FDA has issued a statement that new clinical data shows that Darvocet, Darvon and their generic, propoxyphene, puts patients at risk of potentially serious or even fatal heart rhythms. The FDA concluded that the safety risks of Darvon/Darvocet (propoxyphene) outweigh its benefits.

On November 19, 2010 the manufacturer voluntarily removed the pain reliever from the market.

In 2005 the U.K. began a phased 2 year withdrawal of propoxyphene products from the market.

In 2009 the European Medicine Agency started a phased withdrawal of propoxyphene products from the market. While Xanodyne continues to distribute the brand name Darvon and Darvocet, over 90% of the market share for these drugs belongs to generic manufacturers. The primary manufacturers of medications containing propoxyphene are:

  • Teva USA
  • West-Ward Pharmaceutical
  • Watson Pharmaceutical
  • Mallinckrodt Pharmaceutical
  • Covidien
  • Mylan

Symptoms include:

  • heart arrhythmia
  • heart attack
  • heart failure
  • stroke
  • death

If you are currently taking one of these medications contact your doctor so that he or she can advise you how to stop taking it and help you find a safer painkiller. If you or a loved one have suffered a heart injury while taking Darvon/Darvocet call Showard Law Firm.
